We are experts in dead animal removal, and take our job seriously. When removing dead animals, we do a COMPLETE job — not only do we remove the dead animal from your home or yard, we also decontaminate the area, deodorize it, and dispose of the animal or cremate it. If you aren't sure whether the stench in your house is due to a rotting carcass or another reason, we can sniff it out with our noses from our years of experience. We remove dead raccoons, dead opossums, dead skunks, dead squirrels, dead birds, even dead dogs and cats. We frequently remove dead rodents from inside walls, because poison kills rats and mice, who die in your house. We completely solve your dead animal problem by taking these steps:

  • Sniff out the dead animal if it is somewhere in your home
  • When necessary, for example if the animal is in a wall or under your house, cut a hole to remove the animal
  • Remove the dead animal, safely and completely (and seal the hole if needed)
  • Finish the job by decontaminating and deodorizing your home
  • Properly dispose of the dead animal through incineration or other means
  • Prevent it from happening again by finding out how they got in your house

Dead animal carcass removal is specialty work. Sometimes the job is simple, such as a dead opossum in the yard, in which case we can simply wear our gloves and respirator mask, bag the carcass, and take it away for incineration. Sometimes this is more complex, such as when the dead animal is under a home crawlspace, under a porch or deck or shed. Or if the animal is larger, such as a dog or a deer. The most complex cases are dead animals inside the house. The animal may have died inside the attic, or down in the walls, or the duct work, or any other part of the architecture. You may have a bad smell in your home, and you're not even sure what's causing it. We've removed not just dead animals, but rotting food, bad mold, etc. We specialize in locating the source of the smell, and we very commonly cut a hole in the ceiling or wall to remove the animal. We remove every bit of the carcass, mop up the juices, vacuum the maggots, spray it and wipe it down with disinfectant, cleaner, and we repair the hole we cut. In some cases we use ozone machines to neutralize odor.

Greenville Dead Animal Tip: How Long does it take for a dead rat to start smelling, and then stop smelling?

Now that you’ve taken care of the rat infestation in your home, you might assume that this is all there is to fixing the problem. However, in addition to the disease that live rats carry, there is a bigger problem with a dead rat: the smell. It can permeate your entire house within a matter of days, and can linger for weeks, or even months, after the infestation has been taken care of.

The putrid smell that can accompany a dead rat is one that most people who have smelled it will never be able to forget: most people describe the combination of chemicals that will come about as the body decomposes as the ‘smell of death’- a rotten smell that can also seep into your home’s drywall, as well as the insulation in your attic or crawlspace when you had an infestation in your home.

While, mostly the smell will dissipate as the corpse dries out. However, this process is not a cut-and-dry one that can only take a set amount of time. The time that it takes for a rat or mouse corpse to dry out to the point that it no longer smells can take anywhere from a few weeks to months at a time. Humidity, as well, can slow down the process, making it harder for the corpse to dry out fully, leaving it ‘ripe smelling’ for much longer than expected.

Generally, within the first twenty-four hours of the rat dying, they will start to decompose and smell. This is a combination of the gases and other bodily fluids that were trapped inside the rat being released due to death. When the rat begins to decay, then it will be releasing methane gas, as well as sulfur dioxide. These gases, in conjunction with grease that is seeping from the dead rat’s skin, will lead to the decomposition taking less time than normal, however, it will also make the smell much worse before it gets better.

Once the rat has started to decompose and smell, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to fully stop smelling. Usually, this will happen when the corpse has completely dried out- meaning that all the gas and oils have escaped from the body. However, as mentioned above, if your area is humid, or if the rat happened to die close to a heating unit, or something else that will trap humidity, then it will take much longer for it to fully dry out, and the corpse will start to rot, as opposed to simply drying up and stop smelling.

No matter if you choose to wait for the rat to fully decompose, or choose to call a professional to take care of it, there are safety precautions that you need to keep in mind afterwards. Always make sure to clean any boards that the rat may have rested on with a mixture of bleach and water, as well as sealing up any holes that the rats might have used to e
